Chhavi Bharadvaj -11th Rank - CSE 2007- 2008
These mellifluous words strike a cord, somewhere deep in the heart. I have often thought; let me replace 'my country 'with 'my being'. When a billion plus beings internalize the essence of these words, the country shall indeed awake. To me, the striving to actualize one's potential and make one's work, the very reason for being is the most pristine, the purest form of worship. If this write-up helps young and aspiring minds in their goal- directed pursuits, it would indeed be a great pleasure. Let me tell the readers something about myself first. I was born in Roorkee, my paternal grandparents' abode, though Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand is our native place. Since my parents' jobs are transferable, (my father, Mr. T.M.Bhardwaj, Deputy General Manager, UJVNL and my mother Mrs. Sudha Bhardwaj, Senior Lecturer, Garhwal University) I've had an eclectic schooling- in Uttarkashi, Rishikesh and Hardwar. I graduated with a gold medal in Electronics and Communications Engineering from College of Technology, G.B Pant University, and Pantnagar in August, 2006. I am rather fortunate to have parents, who've been my emotional and motivational bedrock. I attribute, not just my success, but also my value systems, my self belief and my perspective towards life to my parents' guidance, nurturance and support. Chatting with my little sister, Tanushree, who's pursuing B-Tech (I.T) in College of Engineering, Roorkee, has always been a great stress-buster. Becoming 'an IAS', as I foolishly used to say as a kid, is a dream I've nurtured since childhood. As I mellowed up, I could understand the myriad ways in which the service contributes to nation-building, to societal uplift, towards not just system maintenance but also towards development. Reading newspaper reports highlighting the endeavors of civil servants, especially on field, in rural areas, towards education, health, rural connectivity, women empowerment etc, I could always feel - This is where I belong, what I want to do. I finally decided to take the plunge in 2005, while I was still in the 3rd year of the B-Tech degree programme. Regular newspaper reading (The Hindu and Economic Times) adjuncted with basic readings (like NCERTs, D.D.Basu for polity, Bipan Chandra for history, Dutta and Sundaram for economics )commenced soon .I zeroed down upon Public Administration and Psychology as my optionals. Both these subjects interest me a lot and more so, I do believe they are scoring as well. I ensured that from DAY ONE, I had a plan for each day which included concrete targets for G.S. and whichever of the two optionals I was working on at any given time. Within a day of writing my last paper in final year at Pantnagar, I was in Delhi, having enrolled for Psychology at Vajiram and Ravi .I continued with the same institute for G.S. as well. My preparations got more focused and productive from the guidance I received at Vajiram. For prelims, I read as extensively as possible, focusing on current affairs, general knowledge and mental ability part for G.S. One should go through India yearbook((min of I&B pub),Economic Survey, Manorama Yearbook(G.K. portion) ,Yojna and a good magazine like frontline on a regular basis.I followed Laxmikant, Prasad and Prasad, Nicolas Henry, M. Bhattacharya, Stephen Robbins for Pub. Ad. For mains, I focused entirely on the syllabus and tried to cover it comprehensively. I believe that a candidate with good written expression has an edge when it comes to scoring in optionals and essay. It's good to plan -let's say - broadly delineating the portion of syllabus one intends to complete in 3 months, for instance, and then break it down to targets for each day. The core of planning, however, is implementation, since therein lies its rationale. Do plan but ensure that, come hell or high water, you shall attain the target set for the day (barring the work of God or other circumstances beyond human control). One has to be very consistent since this exam tests the ability of the candidate to stay focused and determined, not for days, but for years, in some cases. Hence, intrinsic motivation is the key. If you have the fire burning inside, ensure that it lasts. One must have unfathomable self-belief. Please never feel that owing to dearth of exposure or relative lack of accessible educational facilities or any other reason like 'unimpressive' schooling, poor communication skills, I mean spoken English, we are inferior to anyone. Have it from me, anyone who knows s/he can and works for it diligently, can achieve it. This exam is a great leveler and tests some aspects of the human being inside you. Let self-belief and unremitting hard work be your stepping stones to success. . I wish a great future to all the aspirants.I shall always be available for guidance and advice. Toil to attain thy heights. |
