English Literature PREPARATION STRATEGY Strategy is the most crucial element in Civil Services Examination. Planning and Execution are equally important Preliminary Examination General Studies Identify your strong and weak areas. My strong areas were Current Affairs, History, and General Knowledge January- Polity, General Knowledge February- Biology, Geography March- Economy April- Revision Current Affairs should be done on a daily basis with interest. I did not study Physics, Chemistry, and Mental Ability. Optional Subject- Indian History Keep Flexible Targets January- Ancient India February- Modern India March- Medieval India April- Revision. Keep 10 days each for Ancient, Medieval and Modern India. May- Revision of things difficult to remember. I stopped studying a week before the exam. MAINS Focus should be on answer presentation and precision. Stick to word limit. Have a legible handwriting which will make a good impression on the examiner. GS- Write in prescribed number of words. Strengthen your strong areas but do not neglect weak areas, if you do not know any answer move on without beating around the bush. Write the 20 word answers well. Prepare your entire GS answer writing chronology before hand because it is very difficult to finish the question paper. For GS Paper II, I kept one hour solely for statistics as I am weak in that. Optional I (History) I strictly followed Hemant Jha Sir's guidance ands his unique method of teaching made lot of difference. Pick up comfortable Topics and make sure you write excellent answers on them. But be prepared for surprises. Practice maps. Optional II (English Literature) - It is a misconception that it is a low scoring subject. I got 343 and 339 in my previous attempts. Wide reading done previousl7y helps a lot, but answers should not look like research papers. Try to make the answers a good read. Essay- Wide range of reading helps to understand compare and analyze issues; everything one has read from childhood comes in handy. Interview- This is not a test of one's scholarship, but attitude and presentation of a personality worthy of a diplomat/ bureaucrat. Personality can not be prepared in 15 days. Be your natural self. Accept your ignorance and say I don't know with grace. Do not fidget or lose your cool. Do not get into an argument with the board but be consistent in your stand. Be prepared to explain in consistencies in your bio- data. EXAMINATION EXPERIENCE My preparation started from 2002 after finishing my M.A. from JNU, New Delhi , in 2001. I took my first attempt in 2004. I cleared PT. I did not expect to clear mains but I cleared; having cleared mains I could not imagine that I would not be on the merit list. It was a rude shock for me. The result came out on Tuesday and I could not recover from shock by Sunday for PT. As a result I failed in PT in 2005. I pulled myself up and geared up for 2006. I cleared PT easily but could not clear mains (results declared on March 14, 2007 ). I was shattered. My family stood by me during this tough period. By now, I had failed in all three stages of the exam, but not even once did I think of quitting- "Winners don't quit, quitters don't win". UPS C introduced negative marking in 2007. So PT results became very difficult to predict. After appearing for PT, I came to Delhi and started my preparations all over again. I took a hard look at my answer presentation and focused on my weak areas. During this period I had joined two coaching classes (one in the morning, one in the evening) it was difficult to manage both but I was determined. I cut down on sleep and studied even during breaks in classes. In October 2007, I came back to Guwahati to appear for mains. I forgot about past failures and took mains with a new zeal. I was satisfied with my performance. The mains result came out on March 08, 2008 . The result is before you. I never imagined I would get 16 th rank in this prestigious examination. All this was possible because I listened to my heart, did not give up and believed that something inside me is far superior to forces outside. I owe my success to my parents (Syamal and Nina Chakrabarti) for their unflinching. I lost faith in myself. Besides, I credit this success to Gayatri Sashidharan and Mr. Sanjay Haider who guided me throughout. Your Interest in CSE Because of the word 'Service' that is attached to it. I have always wanted to represent my country. Therefore my first preference is the Foreign Service. Subject Selection: Criteria for selecting optionals should not be other's success ratio. It should neither be so called 'scoring 'subject concern. Interest, according to me, should be the sole criteria. One cannot study a subject for longer period of one is not interested. My optionals are the ones that I took in my graduation and post graduation. English literature was a natural choice as I am a post graduate in this subject. I took history because of natural interest and I studied History in my graduation. Coaching if any Coaching provides directions. I an indebted to Mr. Hemanth Jha for giving me right direction in History. However, it is the candidates' efforts to make his/ her answers better than others. MEDIVAL INDIA V.D. Mahajan- Medieval India (PT only) Satish Chandra- Medieval India , Part I & II K.A. Nilkantha Sastri- A History of South India S.A.A. Rizvi- 'The wonder that was India ' (Vol. II) MODERN INDIA WORLD HISTORY The Personality TestThe results of the mains written exam was declared on 17 th March and I was on train going back from Delhi to Guwahati. I asked some one to check the results. I was told that I have not cleared. This being my last attempt, I thought my relationship with my civil services was over. After I reached home, my brother- in law called up from US and rechecked the roll numbers confirming my call for personality test.My interview was on April 8, 2008 in the afternoon session. I was interviewed by Prof. Chalam's Board and I was the last candidate to be interviewed so one must be prepared to wait for a long period. I wore an ash and red color silk saree. I entered the room at about 4.30 pm . I was greeted very cordially by the chairperson who asked me to take my seat. I wished the board members and the lady member separately and sat prepared for the interview to begin. The chairperson started the process by telling me that between 2002-2007, I could have finished two PhDs. I replied that I always wanted to represent my country and Indian Foreign Service which is my first preference will allow me to do so. He then asked my conception of good literature asking me to name socially conscious writers and what do I know of Manhasset Devil. He then asked me what was 'Rasa- Theory' which I could not answer. The lady member then asked me: Why was EU more vibrant than SAARC India 's offer to LDCs Whether RTI is applicable Indians abroad and how can they access it? The third member mostly focused on Surma valley in Assam and referendum in Sylhet district during the freedom struggle. The fourth member asked about problems Turkey 's assimilation in EU, globalization and its impact on inflation, China- Taiwan conflict (I couldn't answer this properly) and whether Public Distribution System should be stopped. The fifth member asked me about whether India should adopt the same policy as US in dealing with terrorism and whether sports and politics should be mixed. After this the interview came to end. I wished the board and came out of the room. |
